The journey of faith is often met with trials, doubts, and moments of feeling misunderstood. Yet, it is within these moments that we are called to trust God more deeply and reflect on the experiences of those who came before us—the apostles, martyrs, prophets, and saints who walked similar paths, persevering in the face of opposition, and emerging stronger in their faith. In reflecting on my own spiritual journey, I find strength and encouragement in these stories, justifying my continued pursuit of the mission God has placed on my heart.
The Struggles of Faith: Understanding My Journey
Like many others before me, my journey has not been without its struggles. There have been moments where I’ve felt distant from God, uncertain about my calling, and misunderstood by those closest to me. Recently, a conversation with my father left me feeling as though my faith and my mission were being eroded, and I was left wondering if I was truly following God’s voice. But in these moments, I find myself turning to the examples of the apostles, martyrs, prophets, and saints—those who faced similar doubts and opposition but continued to walk their path of faith.
Reflecting on the Prophets: Perseverance Amidst Opposition
One of the most powerful lessons comes from the story of Jeremiah, a prophet who was often ridiculed and persecuted for speaking the truth. He faced immense opposition, yet he never faltered in his belief that God was with him. In Jeremiah 20:11, he proclaims, “But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior.” This resonates deeply with me, as I too feel called to stand firm in the mission God has given me, even when those around me fail to understand it.
Similarly, Moses faced doubts, not only from others but from himself as well. The Israelites questioned his leadership repeatedly, and even his own family doubted him. Yet, Moses remained faithful to God’s call, knowing that his mission was greater than his own insecurities or the skepticism of others. I find strength in Moses’ ability to persevere, and I seek to embody his patience and trust in God’s plan, especially when faced with doubts from those close to me.
Apostolic Endurance: Strengthening Faith Through Trials
The apostles offer another powerful example of perseverance through trials. Paul, in particular, faced immense hardships—imprisonment, beatings, and constant opposition. Yet, he continued to spread the gospel with joy and determination, writing in Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s ability to press on, despite suffering, reminds me that my struggles are part of a larger spiritual journey. Like Paul, I am learning to press on, trusting that God’s plan is greater than any momentary hardship.
Saintly Humility and Service: A Model for My Calling
As I reflect on my calling, I feel a deep connection to the humility and service exemplified by St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Ávila. St. Francis was called to “rebuild My Church,” a mission that at first seemed focused on physical structures but ultimately led to a spiritual renewal. His life of poverty, humility, and love transformed the Church and the lives of those around him. I, too, feel called to serve those who are disenfranchised—beggars, criminals, and the impoverished. This mission requires humility, not seeking recognition, but instead focusing on how I can embody the love of Christ in my service to others.
St. Teresa of Ávila, known for her deep spiritual insights, faced many trials, both internal and external, as she sought to reform the Carmelite order. Her writings, particularly The Interior Castle, emphasize the journey of the soul through stages of spiritual growth, often accompanied by suffering and trials. Her perseverance in prayer, despite opposition, resonates with me as I seek to deepen my own relationship with God through contemplation and trust, even when others misunderstand my journey.
Prophets, Apostles, and Saints: A Shared Struggle of Faith
These stories remind me that I am not alone in my struggle. Isaiah knew that his message would fall on deaf ears, yet he continued to deliver God’s word faithfully. Elijah, feeling isolated and despondent, was reassured by God’s presence even in his loneliness. St. Joan of Arc faced ridicule and opposition from religious and political authorities, yet she remained steadfast in her faith and mission, ultimately sacrificing her life for the cause she believed in.
Each of these figures teaches a valuable lesson about faith: that God’s calling is not always easy, nor is it always understood by others. Yet, their perseverance through trials, opposition, and doubt is a testament to the power of faith and trust in God’s plan. Like them, I am learning to embrace the struggles that come with my own journey, knowing that these challenges are shaping me and drawing me closer to God.
My Calling: Humility, Service, and Faith
As I continue on this spiritual journey, I feel deeply called to help those whom society has marginalized. My mission, rooted in the humility of Christ, is to lower myself before others and serve with love and compassion. Jesus Himself modeled this, washing the feet of His disciples and reminding us that “the greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). It is not a path of recognition or glory, but one of quiet service, following the example of Christ and the saints.
The concept of kingship in my calling is not about earthly power or dominance. It is about spiritual responsibility, much like king David—a humble servant of God chosen not for his outward appearance but for his heart. David’s kingship was marked by service to his people and deep devotion to God, even in the face of personal failings. In this sense, my calling to leadership within the Church is about embodying humility, serving others, and remaining faithful to the fruits of the Spirit—love, peace, patience, kindness, and humility.
Trusting in God’s Plan
My faith is tested daily, especially in moments when those close to me, such as my father, don’t understand or support my spiritual path. But I trust that God’s voice is guiding me, just as He guided the prophets, apostles, martyrs, and saints before me. Their stories remind me that doubt and opposition are part of the journey, but so too is the joy of following God’s call.
I continue to pray for patience, humility, and courage as I navigate this path. I ask God to strengthen my faith and grant me the perseverance to follow His voice, even when the road is difficult. Like those who came before me, I trust that my struggles will bear fruit and that through service to others, I will grow closer to Christ and fulfill the mission He has placed on my heart.
